How open tracking works

4 min readWhat open tracking measures, how Hot leads scores contacts, and the limits to know about.

Open tracking tells you when a recipient opens an email you sent. It’s part of the Open tracking + Hot leads add-on.

Turning it on

In Compose, tick Track opens before sending. Tracking is per message and off by default.

What happens behind the scenes

When tracking is on, VoraMail adds a tiny transparent image to the HTML version of your email. The image URL contains a random token unique to that message. When the recipient’s email client loads images, it requests that URL and we record an open with the time.

You’ll see:

  • an in-app notification on the first open,
  • the open count and the time of each open in the thread’s side panel (open it from Sent),
  • the recipient’s score in Hot leads.

How Hot leads scores contacts

Each open contributes up to 12 points, halving every three days as it gets older. Every distinct email a contact opened adds 8 points. Scores are capped at 100: Hot is 50 or more, Warm 20 to 49, Cold below 20.

Limits you should know

  • Image blocking. If a recipient’s client doesn’t load images, no open is recorded.
  • Privacy proxies. Apple Mail Privacy Protection and some corporate security scanners load images automatically. An open may be recorded without the person reading the email.
  • Forwarding. If the email is forwarded, the new reader’s opens count toward the original recipient.

Treat opens as a useful signal, not proof. Read our blog post on open tracking and its limits for more.

Privacy

Only messages you choose to track contain a pixel. Be transparent with recipients where regulations in your region require it.
